A charming portrait of a young boy
in gilt metal frame with paste surround
Cotes was taught painting by his brother Francis a portrait painter in oil and pastel. He exhibited at the R.A. and Society of Artists. His first exhibition piece shown at the R.A. matched the ambitions of the new Academy - a large full-length miniature on ivory of the actress Mrs Yates in the classical role of Electra (in the V&A). This was inspired by the large oil paintings of ladies emulating classical roles by the Academy's first president, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Cotes exhibited at the R.A. until 1789.
