Major Orde in military uniform

The miniature can be dated 1811 or later because of the shoulder cord and aiguilette seen on the uniform instead of a fringed epaulette. The portrait was probably executed to celebrate his first marriage to Margaret Maria Elizabeth Beckford, daughter of William Beckford and Lady Margaret Gordon, on 15 May 1811. He married, secondly, Lady Elizabeth Susan Somerset, daughter of Henry Charles Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort and Lady Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower, on 11 November 1829.2 He died in 1850 He had two daughters by his first wife.

James Orde, was Major General from June 1814 to 1830. He was nearly cashiered in 1812 for overzealously flogging some of his men and defrauding his quartermaster, but that doesn't appear to have hindered his promotion from Colonel to Major General less than two years later.
We are grateful to Mr. Christopher Bryant for his help in the catalogue entry.
