Size: 47.5 cm long – 18¾ ins long

Ivory tusks were employed as pestles by Kuba women in food preparation. They were a potent symbol, and indication of the relationship between success in hunting and the display of status imbued objects. Elephant hunting was of great importance among the Kuba in the 19th century and was an activity that was shrouded in ritual. Honour and prestige was given to successful hunters and to their families.
