The jardinière is finely decorated all over with Cloisonné enamel depicting butterflies amongst a floral background. The jardinière has an applied gilt-bronze rim and base and finely modelled dragon mounts forming the handles, it retains its original metal liner.
Cloisonné enamelling is accomplished by adding thin metal strips or wire to the surface of a metal object to create small cells (cloisons). These cells are either filled with molten glass or with powdered glass that is then fired.
The Cloisonné, Chinese, Guangxu Period, Late Qing (1875-1908).
