William Moore (of York) was born in Birmingham in 1790 and studied design under Richard Mills. He set up a successful portrait practice working in Birmingham, London and mostly York where he died in 1851. Among his thirteen sons were the artists Albert Joseph, Edwin, Henry, John Collingham and William Jnr.
