Linke Index number: 118 Linke title: 'Table Louis XVI, bois d'acajou bronze dorés.'
This fine gilt-bronze mounted mahogany table de milieu or centre table has a Pakistan onyx marble top inset within a gilt-bronze frame, above a frieze with a single drawer centred by fine gilt bronze mounts depicting a mask of Apollo flanked by cornucopia, goats and scrolling foliage. The table is raised on four square section tapering legs with trailing foliate mounts and caps.
The early Linke drawings and his description in the price list, combined with a photograph of this table in the archive of Linke photographs curated by Christopher Payne, confirm this table as being from the Linke workshops as much as the incredible quality of the construction and the fine finishing on the gilt-bronze mounts.
In addition the Linke archive has pencil sketches for a similar table in Linke's First Daybooks corresponding with index number 118. It is recorded in the Linke archive that a version of this table was made in 1904-08, another version with a hinged glass top made in 1919.
