A Fine Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Kingwood and Marquetry Secretaire à Abattant, with a shaped and moulded Breche d'Alep marble top above an inlaid fall front, enclosing a black leather-lined writing surface, a shelf and five small drawers, above a pair of cupboard doors, the interior of which is fitted with a single shelf, the exterior applied with gilt bronze flowerheads and scrolls and flanked by female terms. The secretaire stands on scrolled acanthus feet.

Kingwood was a pre-eminent cabinet wood in France, so popular with Louis XIV and Louis XV that it became known as kingwood. Native to Brazil, it is similar to rosewood although somewhat paler and finer.
