Provenance : From the collection of an English Private Museum
Jade was introduced to India from China via central Asia during the Mughal dynasty ( 1526 - 1857 ) and is still considered to have great prophylactic qualities . When worn in contact with the body it can control heart palpitations , divert lightening and resist the action of poisons .
At the Mughal court jewellery was a major means by which rulers proclaimed prestige . It was often presented as gifts to ensure the loyalty of dependants of lower status , whose lives revolved around the court . A ruler's power was reinforced and assured by his control of a centralised store of wealth , including jewellery . His position was made more secure by the public demonstration of solemn state and religious functions where sumptuary rulers dictated the costumes and displays of jewellery worn by the rulers and courtiers .
