At the Mughal court jewellery was a major means by which rulers proclaimed prestige . It was often presented as gifts to ensure the loyalty of dependants of lower status , whose lives revolved around the court . His position was made more secure by the public demonstration of solemn state and religious functions where sumptuary rulers dictated the costumes and displays of jewellery worn by the rulers and courtiers .
