A Fine Nguni , South Africa ‘Sangomas’ or Diviners Staff carved with an elaborately single entwined and coiled serpent
19 th Century

Size : 147 cm long – 58 ins long
The beautifully coiled end entwined serpent , almost abstract in its design , carved down the length of this staff is evidence of its probable use by a ritual healer and diviner rather than by a chief .
The motif of the snake , symbolic of power and transformation was frequently used throughout southern Africa by such practitioners . 'Nyangas' or 'Sangomas' were the custodians of ancestral knowledge and are known to have carried these sticks and used them as divining rods .
