A fine portrait of King George III wearing a powdered wig en queue, and full ceremonial coronation gown with ermine border
This impressively large miniature is taken from Reynolds's portrait of George III of 1779. . Nixon worked both in London and Edinburgh. In 1792 he was appointed limner to the Prince Regent and miniature painter to the Duchess of York. Another less finished version by Nixon of this miniature, in the Duke of Rutland's family, was exhibited in London at a special loan exhibition of Royal Portrait Miniatures, at the Mall Galleries 11-23rd October, 2011. It is illustrated in the catalogue in colour, Number 18
