set in the original gold frame, the reverse with initials DD on locks of hair tied with gold wire on opalescent ground
Hone exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1772 and was elected ARA in 1779. In 1782 he went to Dublin and established a practice as a miniature portrait painter. He specialised in richly coloured head-and-shoulders miniatures, working mostly in watercolour and occasionally in enamel; Appointed Miniature Painter to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1795, he returned to London in 1804, also working in Bath that year. Hone continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1822.
