Beauclerk was a great-grandson of Charles Beauclerk, first Duke of St Albans, an illegitimate son of Charles II and Nell Gwynn.
The miniature was painted in 1798, the year he married Mary Fitzhugh, presumably commissioned as a token of his affection, to mark their wedding. John was a commissioner of Bankrupts.
