A fine portrait of William of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1626-50), father of King William III and husband of Princess Mary—the daughter of Charles I
Wearing a brown tunic over white chemise, a brown feathered beret
Enamel, inscribed on the reverse Prince of Orange./ Painted by Henry Pierce Bone/ after Frank Hals, May 1853

In elaborate pierced, scrolling gilded gesso frame
Although the prototype for this portrait has not been found, Bone would most certainly have had access to works in the Royal Collection and this portrait is reminiscent of the full length portrait by Honrthorst of William as a child, purchased by Charles I and still in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen
