This finely drawn watercolour of a Flying fish was painted by an Indian artist. The British in India and the East Indies during the 18th and early 19th century were enthusiastic collectors of natural history subjects. The Marquis Wellesley during his time as Governor-General of Fort William from 1798 to 1805 amassed over two thousand, six hundred drawings of plants, birds, mammals, insects and fishes. These now form part of the India Office library collection of Company school drawings.
