This is a rare, early and dated, Boston Handicraft Shop silver bowl with makers mark for Frederick (Frans) Gyllenberg. Dated 1905 it is from the very start of the Amercian arts and crafts movement. Designed by Mary Knight, also of the Handicraft Shop.
The Boston Handicraft Shop was at the heart of the Boston, and hence American, arts and crafts movement. Originally from Sweden, Gyllenberg joined the Boston Handicraft Shop in around 1905 and became one of the leading silversmiths of the movement. He was awarded the prestigous medal for excellence in craftsmanship by the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts, awards similarly conferred on the likes of Edward Oakes and Elizabeth Copeland.
A beautiful, hand raised piece, of a very good gauge of silver, this is a rare and perfect reflection of the early work of the US arts and crafts movement.
