D331. A bell striking and repeating French carriage clock, circa 1870, striking and repeating on a bell and with an alarm. It employs a cylinder escapement and is numbered to the back-plate 3243. The case is almost completely covered with solid malachite.

We have seen carriage clocks with malachite applied as decoration, for instance as side panels or as a veneer in certain areas but never one in which the whole of the case, as in this instance, is completely covered in solid malachite, a difficult and expensive process.

The columns have silver and gilded mounts applied to the top. Delicately written roman numerals are applied to both the main and the alarm white enamelled dials which are set off by an engraved and gilded mask. The top malachite panel has an oval window..There is no carrying handle.
A clock with the same malachite case, dials and mask, but grande sonnerie striking, was sold in the London rooms on 10th April 2006.

Height. 5" (13cms.) £5,950.
