Water-gilding relaid on mostly original preparation; glass replaced.
(According to inscription on reverse) Allan family, Blackwell Grange, near Darlington, England.

On the backboard of this piece are two inscriptions in different hands, one in pencil reads:
"This Glass came from Blackwell Grange 1790 Robrt Allan"

Then in ink:
"Brought back to Blackwell Grange 1895"

The Allan family had a centuries long association with the north east of England and owned several properties there including Blackwell Hall (demolished 1965), Blackwell Cottage (also now demolished) and Blackwell Grange, which has been an hotel since 1970. It is likely the inscriptions record the movement of the looking-glass between their properties over the years.
