A George II mahogany side chair
in the manner of Giles Grendey or Paul Saunders circa 1740/50
The waved top rail centred by a shell with scrolled angles above a pierced vertical splat with scrolled base, above a padded seat covered in green and gold silk woven with birds and foliage, on cabriole legs headed by acanthus and with scrolled leaf-wrapped feet, stamped ‘RL’,

Provenance:
Probably supplied to John I. Martin (1692-1767), Overbury, Worcestershire.
Purchased by a private collector, Christies, London, 15 September 2005, lot 58.

This side chair is designed in the George II 'Roman' fashion and was formerly en suite with a pair of armchairs previously at Ham Court, Worcestershire (sold by Christopher Bromley-Martin, Esq., Christie's London, 19 November 1981, lot 17). The set may have formed part of the furnishings at Overbury, Worcestershire, the seat of the Martin family in the 18th century.

This chair relates to a set of eagle-clawed chairs supplied to Gunton Hall, Norfolk, which bears the trade label for Giles Grendey (see C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, fig.435.) A set of similar walnut chairs are at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire and another are at Ammerdown, Somerset
