An superb example of pure understated early 18th century design and cabinetmaking. This one piece mahogany kneehole desk must surely have been a one off commission based upon the fashionable smaller form of the time. Here it is made larger with a sublime single drawer to the top, an overhang to the 'back' of the top, and the kneehole compartment on secret runners. The base moulding and bracket feet are finished on all sides and the 'back' is fitted with finished mahogany.
The colour and patina are rich and 'untouched', the one piece top telling many a tale of the first and subsequent owners use and enjoyment of the desk! The lovely brassware is all original.
A private collection.
