A George II double-lidded boat-shaped Snuffbox, maker's mark and lion passant only for Peter Wirgman, London circa 1740. The lids with flat-chased ornament and script initials.
The marks are struck on the interior of one lid and on the upper side of the interior base [the compartment divider seperating them]. Each has a clear maker's mark and a less distinct lion passant.
For a discussion of this mark, often confused with that of Peter Werritzer, see Brian Beet, 'Foreign Snuffbox Makers', in the Silver Society Journal.
