The Basket is modelled in a design, previously unknown to us and stands on an oval flared foot decorated with an applied band of beading and which is also pierced with plain vertical pails. The main body has an unusual wavy rim which is decorated with beading. The upper section is also pierced with vertical pails, interspersed with roundels. The piercing is decorated with Neo-Classical drapery swags and tassels tied with floral oval medallions, with foliate motifs below. The main body also displays four crisp finely modelled Neo-Classical covered urns, surrounded by a laurel leaf frame, and the base shows an unusual outer band of beaded scroll work. The handle is cast in two sections and is attached to the main body with shell mouldings and is decorated with bold beading, scroll work and a vacant circular cartouche. The Basket is an excellent unusual example of Neo-Classical design and is very well marked in the piercing. William Plummer was a specialist pierced worker, of fine quality, and his output was almost entirely confined to pierced objects. He had large workshops located in Gutter Lane when this piece was made.
