A charming George III mahogany spider-leg table, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, the rectangular twin-flap drop-leaf top standing on ring turned and square block legs joined by turned stretchers and terminating in pad feet, the legs opening on a gate-leg mechanism. The mahogany of good colour throughout.

Depth with the two flaps raised: 37 in (94 cm)

An almost identical ‘spider’ gate-leg table with eight similarly plain turned legs was supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Sir Edwin Knatchbull for Mersham-le-Hatch in 1768 and invoiced as ‘To 2 neat Mahogany Spider leg Tables of good wood £1 8s’. A related table The Vyne, Hampshire was described in the 1776 inventory as a ‘spider leg’ table .
