Thomas Chippendale is known to have supplied practical mahogany oval trays to his clients including one to the Earl of Dumfries, for Dumfries House, which has been identified by Christopher Gilbert as ‘To a large mahogany comp Tea Tray wt a neat cut trim 1.16’ supplied on 4 March 1763.
The distinctive deep sides and bold scrolled carrying handles of this tray relate closely to drawings in plate XV of Ince and Mayhew’s 1762 Universal System of Household Furniture.
