Circular, the centre applied with a plaque in the 17th century manner depicting the Rape of the Sabine Women within a leaf and berry border, surrounded by a sunken well with finely chased and embossed band in the "Dutch bloom" manner of tulips and roses, the cast border in four sections depicting Classical and mythological scenes: The Gods on Mount Olympus with Apollo playing the lyre, Banquet of the Gods with Jupiter presenting Ganymede with a cup, and Hercules embracing Omphale, applied with slanted gadroon border of alternate plain and frosted beads
The present lot is illustrated as plate 1176 in V. Brett, The Sotheby's Directory of Silver (London, 1976) page 259.
