A delightful Georgian Antique Silver Argyle, with a round body, gadroon border at the top, a pull off lid and a wicker handle. The body and the lid are engraved with the Percy family, Dukes of
Northumberland crest. The Argyle has a central heating chamber to keep the contents hot. The Argyle is marked on the side of the body and the inside of the lid. Height to finial 5 inches 12.6cm, Width of base 3.5 inches 9 cm
Argyles are generally accepted to have been containers for gravy or sauce, the design incorporating some form of heat preserving element. The credit for inventing these pieces goes to the 3rd Duke of Argyll, as he and his Duchess became tired of their sauces arriving cold at the dining table at Inverary Castle.
