A lovely quality Gorge cased French carriage clock. The eight-day duration movement, with the original platform lever escapement, strikes the hours and half hours on a gong with a push repeat to the top, and is stamped with the serial number '23265'. The Gorge style brass case is also stamped with the serial number to it's base. The white enamel dial has blued steel spade hands, black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markings, with a silvered 'sight' ring to the outer edge.
The Gorge case came into fashion in the late Victorian period and was primarily used by the top makers and roulant blanc makers to house the best quality movements. The quality of both the movement and escapement would suggest this example was made by one of the better Paris makers for retail in the English market for which this style was aimed.
