A Grand Tour Torso of Hercules
After the Antique
Italian, late 18th or 19th century
Rosso Verona stone, on a black wood base
Height of figure 23 ½ cm. / 9 ¼ ins, overall 37 cm. / 14 ½ ins

The exaggerated proportions of the musculature in this finely-carved Grand Tour torso recall ancient depictions of the Roman demi-god Hercules, most notably that of the famous Farnese Hercules, a Roman copy of a lost ancient Greek bronze prototype by Lysippos. This colossal ancient statue was found in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in the sixteenth century and is now housed in the Museo Nazionale Archeologico, Naples. The choice of material, rosso verona, is a type of very hard coloured stone from quarries in the Veneto.
