Listing Information
A large grande-sonnerie carriage clock by this fine maker. The eight-day duration movement has a platform lever escapement and strikes both the quarters and hours at each hour on two bells (grande-sonnerie strike), with a lever to the back allowing for changing to petite-sonnerie (just the quarters at each quarter) or silent. The backplate of he movement is stamped with the Bourdin serial number 4469 whilst the frontplate is stamped with the mark of the roulant blanc maker Holingue (H.L.) along with the their serial number 5527. Other Bourdin clocks are known with Holingue movements including 3701 and a Drocourt clock of a similar design is also known with the H.L. mark. The shuttered rear door has typical Bourdin floral decoration and is signed 'Bourdin, Hger Brevete, R de la Paix, Paris' along with the selection lever and markings for setting and winding the alarm. The backplate is engraved with the settings for the day and date dials along with the serial number.
The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands, a seconds dial and three subsidiary dials for day, date and alarm and has a repeat signature and address. The corniche style case is typical of Bourdin with the distinctive handle most associated with his clocks and with a push button repeat to the top.
