Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler
Form no. 341
H. 17 cm
No mark (like most comparative pieces)

In the 18th Century the Meissen group of shepherd lovers was one of the most popular models. It exists in two versions – with and without tree. The initial version, which Kaendler created in 1738, had a tree in the background (Rückert 1966 no. 869; Gröger p. 199; Honey p. 118 fn. 234).

Kaendler describes the model without tree in his "Taxa" – the records in which he noted his products he made in the hours after his regular work – as follows (Rafael no. 117 p. 55; Menzhausen p. 200):

"1 group depicting a lady neatly dressed in an Andrienne and a shephered well clad in his costume embracing each other, alongside with a little sheep, 12 Thlr."

TEMPLATE:
Kaendler was inspired by the etching "Bergère et son mouton penchée sur son berger" by the Parisian engraver Gabriel Huquier (1725–1805). The etching is part of the series "Quatrième Livre de sujet et pastorales" (Pierrette no. 1156 p. 282 fig. 284) and follows a template by François Boucher (1703–1770).
