Recently acquired from a long standing collection of early oak in Suffolk, this superb James I oak chest has a triple panelled mitred lid held by its original butterfly hinges, a lunette carved rail and three panels carved with diamonds and roundels. The stiles, muntins and bottom rail are carved with demi-lune shapes and it has its original carved spandrels. The sides are double panelled and the back and bottom are boarded. It has a fine original lockplate and hasp and a working key which may also be original. Wonderful untouched colour and patination. This is a fine example of old fashioned collector's oak furniture at a very reasonable price.
