A particularly fine carving, the shishimai outfit with bushy mane and tail reminiscent of the best Osaka carvers. Curiously the boy's robe is decorated with a hexagram.

In addition to the mane and tail, the heavy stain is also a feature of Osaka netsuke

Cornelius V.S. Roosevelt collection, sold in his sale at Sotheby's New York, 2nd June 1992, lot 210 (recorded in the catalogue as having an inlaid eye missing from the mask, since replaced)
