An important Thames Valley com back armchair by John Pitt (1714-59) of Upton-cum-Chalvey (now Slough). This example is the eighth chair with a definite attribution to John Pitt and it has been identified as such Bob Parrott who co-wrote an extensive article on John Pitt chairs in the Regional Furniture Society Journal 2005. As with other examples it is in cherry wood with a walnut arm bow and a wide elm seat on the underside of which can be seen the mark where the maker's label was fixed. The extended head rest was probably added during the lifetime of the original owner.
Flaxley Abbey, Gloucestershire.
