Mounted on a modern iron base, having multiple vertical facets all with replacement gnomons this horological oddity most likely hails from Scotland - though sited from the early 16th century onwards in Germany, France and the Court of Henry VIII, the majority of the extant multi-faceted dials are in Scotland.

This fine, though weathered through time, stone example has 14 sides making it a cuboctahedron; that is to say a polyhedron with eight triangular faces and six square faces, twelve sides with dials and a plain top and base. It is possible that this dial fitted between a base and a higher section or again it is possible that this example was up high with a finial atop.
