Painted in Chinese Ming Transitional style with figures on horseback, scholars and buffalo amongst pine and bamboo below a border of lappets.
These ribbed vases are amongst the earliest large pieces made at Delft. This is a boldly formed example with a particularly confident finial. This would once have been part of a garniture of vases and in spite of the firing flaws to the glaze it was not discarded.
Large section of foot restuck, two sections of the neck restored, further restoration to ribs on the neck and the rim of the cover and the tip of the finial, various chips restored, one 3 cm. diam. circle of glaze restored.
One side with large areas of creeping to the glaze where it has not adhered to the body.
