This impressive bookcase is of incredible size and nearly 160 inches wide (4.6m). Of shallow breakfront form it is made with the finest mahogany veneers and has a shaped cornice above three sections with adjustable shelves enclosed by astragal glazed doors.
The lower section of the bookcase has finely figured mahogany doors, inlaid with cartouches of satinwood inlay, enclosing adjustable shelves.
Although this impressive bookcase is very much in the eighteenth century English style, both in its choice of timbers and the use of fine astragal glazing to the doors. Its construction confirms that it was almost certainly made in one of the best Paris workshops towards the end of the nineteenth century. Both its size, style and exceptional quality of timber would suggest it to have been created as a special commission.
