Maria Luisa was one of eighteen children, of the future King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and his wife 's Archduchess Maria Carolina of Habsburg-Lorraine ; paternal grandparents were Charles III of Spain and his wife, Princess Maria Amalia of Saxony , while the mother was Francis I of Lorraine and Maria Theresa of Austria.
On 15 August 1790 she married her first cousin Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg-Lorraine , Grand Duke of Tuscany.
