A late 18th century Directoire Period mahogany commode, the shaped marble top above three short and two long drawers with brass panelled mounts and rectangular handles, the fluted column ends terminating in turned tapering feet with brass sabots.

The Directoire style was essentially born of the architects and designers Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pier François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853). The Directoire Period in the arts, ran concurrently with the post-Revolution French Directory (1795-1799). This style incorporates Neoclassical architectural form, reduced carved elements, plane expanses of highly figured mahogany and walnut veneers and is a transitional style, falling between the opulence of the Louis XVI era and the stark severity of the Empire.
