A late 18th Century Directoire commode, the top with shaped ends above three long panelled drawers, all mounted with brass lion mask handles and foliate lock escutcheons, between fluted column ends and all raised upon turned tapering feet.

The Directoire style was essentially born of the architects and designers Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pier François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853). The Directoire Period in the arts, ran concurrently with the post-Revolution French Directory (1795-1799). This style incorporates Neoclassical architectural form, reduced carved elements, plain expanses of highly figured mahogany and walnut veneers and is a transitional style, falling between the opulence of the Louis XVI era and the stark severity of the Empire.
