wearing a green coat and white waistcoat the reverse of the frame with the initials FP.

Smart was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Artists (FSA) in 1765, then director in 1772, Vice-President in 1777, and finally President in 1778, a position he held until the society's liquidation. This miniature was painted three years before Smart embarked for Madras, India in pursuit of fame and fortune. It has not been possible to identify the sitter with any certainty but this is nevertheless a strong miniature painted by an artist in his early 40's.
