William Singleton (d. 1793) was one of a family of artist (brother of Joseph Singleton) all of whom lived and worked in London. He was a pupil of Ozias Humphry and the painstaking work here reflects Humphry's influence. He exhibited at the Society of Artists, 1770-1790 and at the Royal Academy, 1779-90.

This miniature was probably painted in the 1760's and is typical of the "modest" period of portraiture in its use of small ivory base and short or stippled brush strokes..
