A George III oval Scottish School Prize, 'Presented by the Magistrates of Leith to the Dux of the First Class in Elocution', and engraved on the obverse 'John Brown Dux Augt. 11th 1809. The gift of John Hay Jeweller.' The medal is struck with the maker's mark only of John Hay and 'Gavins Sct.' Hector Gavin, senior and junior, worked in partnership as engravers in Parliament Close, Edinburgh, from 1809-12. Hector Gavin, junior, has been recorded as signing a number of engraved medals. The Newcastle engraver, Thomas Bewick, on his second visit to Edinburgh in 1823 ' paid my respects to the son and successor of my kind friend of former days, the late Mr. Hector Gavin.' [Recorded by Bewick in his autobiography and noted by Grimshaw, 'Silver Medals from Scottish and Irish Schools before 1872', published M.E. Grimshaw, 1989]
