A Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Dappled Mahogany Ladies Dressing Chest or Table en Chiffonière, After The Model by Adam Weisweiler.

This unusual Table en Chiffonière has a hinged top opening to reveal a shallow well.

The original model of this work table by Adam Weisweiler is now in the Wallace Collection, London. It was most likely supplied by the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre, with the gilt-bronze frieze being undertaken by François Rémond.

Although the table resembles a small chest-of-drawers, it was almost certainly originally designed as a work table. Peter Hughes in the Catalogue of the Wallace Collection, quotes André Jacob Roubo, author of L'Art du Menuisier (The Art of the Joiner) published between 1769 and 1774, on this point:

"les chiffonières ... sont des espèces de petites Commodes, ou, pour mieux dire, de petites tables à l'usage des Dames, dont elles se servent lorsqu'elles travaillent, soit à coudre ou à broder."
Hughes, Peter (1996), The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture, London; Vol II, p. 1108-1114, F.328.
