A finely detailed pair of portraits, painted in oil on canvas circa 1820, depicting a sea captain wearing his finest waistcoat and seated at a cloth covered table. On the wall behind is a ship's portrait, likely his vessel, and on the table rests his telescope. The pair depicts his wife in the most sumptuous of dresses, a long gold guard chain about her shoulders and wearing black lace gloves holding a sprig of fusia. She sits on a fine mahogany framed chaise longue and on the wall behind her hangs the pair to the ship's portrait seen in her husband's portrait. They are within finely grained maple veneered frames of the period and both are inscribed to the reverse in pencil 'Painted by Rutland Schoolmaster, Coronation Square Lynn'. English circa 1820.
