An important and unusually large rosewood, brass and parcel gilt library table. The rounded rectangular hinged top is above a frieze and simulated drawers on style end supports with scroll and cornucopia spandrels and stylised roundels on moulded bases and brass shell- capped lion’s paw feet.
The above library table bears characteristics of several leading Regency cabinet makers. Similar lion’s paw feet appear on brass inlaid pieces by Gillow including a games table and a sofa table at Fasque, Scotland, home of the Gladstone family.
The use of stylised brass motifs can also be seen on a bureau bookcase attributed to George Oakley, one of the leading exponents on inlaid brass work in the Regency period. Oakley worked for the Prince Regent at Carlton House and also supplied furniture and upholstery for the Mansion House and the Bank of England, his work for the Cheere family of Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire is perhaps his best known commission and reflects a similar Grecian style to that applied to the above table.
