A nineteenth century marine powder horn bearing a depiction of a ship with the name of the carver and the date;‘G. JTHACKER 63D REG SERPENT ‘74’.

This type of engraved and stained decoration, known as scrimshaw, originated on whaling ships in the mid-eighteenth century. It was a popular way of passing time on long marine voyages, particularly among whalers who were only able to hunt their quarry during daylight hours, and who thus had more free time than other sailors.
