Gesso-cutting is becoming a bit of a lost art. Why? Because it is very time consuming. Gesso-cutting is the stage in the gilding of objects between the application and smoothing of the gesso, and before the painting on of the colour and then laying of the gold leaf. The contours of the wood are rediscovered and more veining and embellishments are added. We have given these frames a superb gesso-cut seldom seen in modern gilding because of the commercial constraints of finishing a task as quickly as possible. The benefit of this is that they exude a feeling of quality that a close examination only confirms.
