No other example of such a false-bottomed tankard seems to be recorded.

The cylindrical body holds a smaller inner cup to reduce the amount of liquid held. This inner cup would have been fired separately and held inside the tankard by the gilt metal rim.

The original hinged cover inset with a Saxon thaler dated 1711, depicting the King on horseback, coat of arms below, the reverse inscribed ‘FRID:AUG REX ELECTOR & VICARIUS POSTMORT:IOSE:IMPERAT:MDCCXI’

16.4 cm high including thumbpiece
A fine hairline crack around body, partly a firing crack, probably due to the inset cup. Short crack to rim of inner cup.
From a collection formed in the 1920s of an industrialist in the Rhineland.
