Africano marble is multi-coloured marble quarried in Turkey near Teos. Africano marble is black with spots of red, beige, white, and grey. It was used for decoration, especially in ancient Greek and Roman buildings. Africano marble was also used in Basilica of Saint
Peter in Rome and Westminster Cathedral.

This marble remained a mystery until the quarry was rediscovered by an English professor - M. H. Balance - in 1966. By this time the quarry had filled up with water to become a small lake.

Note: The top has an old break, now repaired.
