The mirrored superstructure surmounted by the coat-of- arms of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, above three frieze drawers and two cupboard doors, with paper label to the reverse of the superstructure inscribed 'T. Woodgate. Dealer in foreign China, ancient and modern furniture, curiosities, paintings, armour, point lace, ancient carved oak, buhl and marquetry, bronzes, sculpture and all articles of vertu. 94, 95, 96 High Holborn.'
This vine-wreathed sideboard, with medallioned trophies emblematic of agriculture and the chase, is richly carved in the Elizabethan fashion promoted by Great Exhibitions of the mid-19th century. Its triumphal arched mirror bears the arms of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, who succeeded to the Encombe estates in 1854.
This sideboard is labelled by the little recorded T. Woodgate of High Holborn, who appears to have specialised in selling both antique and modern furniture in the 'antiquarian' taste.
