Luisa Fernanda, Infanta of Spain and Duchesse de Montpensier (1832-1897)
Enamel in chased gilt-metal frame with bracelet strap of plaited hair.
This portrait compares well with an enamel by Simpson in the Royal Collection after Franz Winterhalter’s full length portrait of Luisa.
Luisa was the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand VII of Spain and his fourth wife, Maria Christina of the Two Scillies. At 14 she married Antoine, Duc de Montpensier, the fifth son of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, in a dual nuptial ceremony alongside here sister, Queen Isabella II of Spain. Luisa remained heiress presumptive to the Spanish throne until the birth of her niece, Maria Isabel, Princess of Austria in 1851.
